Turning Insurance Into Stand-Up

Every life insurance ad was saying the same thing in the same way. Tata AIA gave us room to break that pattern, trading polished emotional films for comedy built for the scroll instead of the screen.

Challenge

  • Life insurance advertising had spent years relying on emotional storytelling, polished films and television-first thinking. But once audiences moved to their phones, every ad had to earn attention instead of expecting it. The category was still speaking the same language, even though people had changed the way they consumed content.
  • The problem was not that people had stopped caring about life insurance. They had stopped giving traditional insurance advertising a chance. Before the category could change how people felt about it, it first had to change how it showed up.

Solution

  • Instead of asking how to make a better insurance ad, we asked a different question: what if it did not feel like advertising at all?
  • The answer was comedy. Rather than another emotional film, we built a series around humour, using everyday situations to communicate the benefits of Tata AIA's term insurance plans in a way that felt native to social media.
  • Atul Khatri, Kenny Sebastian and Rahul Dua fronted a series of eight films, each built around a different product benefit while leading with humour instead of hard selling. To make the films feel even more authentic, we collaborated with a director known for a deliberately raw visual style, using handheld camera work, awkward pauses and natural imperfections that made the content feel more like something audiences would discover while scrolling than a traditional advertisement. In one film, the artist never even mentions the brand. If the content could hold attention without relying on the logo, the idea had already succeeded.

Outcome

  • The shift in tone did more than make people laugh. It made them stay long enough for the brand to be remembered. The campaign delivered a 6.7% absolute brand lift, significantly above the category average of 2%, making it Tata AIA's strongest-performing campaign at the time.
  • The work went on to win Gold for Most Innovative Content Strategy and Silver for Best Brand Video at afaqs! Foxglove 2024, proving that the fastest way to make people listen to life insurance was not to change the message, but to change the way it was told.
